One Local’s Guide To Make a Visit To Las Vegas

Greetings! While many of you who are planning a trip to Las Vegas already have some clue of where you want to visit, there are many favorite places known to most of the locals of Las Vegas that visitors might not be aware of! Since I was born and raised in Las Vegas, it’s safe to assume that I know a few interesting places that most tourists aren’t made privy to that often. A few of the following items are my personal favorite parts of Las Vegas.

Restaurants-

The Main Street Station Buffet:

This buffet is both affordable and has variety! From its samplings of Hawaiian-prepared meat to Southern-style cooking, this old casino’s buffet impressed me with the food offering I got for the money.

MGM Grand-Benihana’s :

While Benihana’s is a pretty well-known restaurant chain, it’s still good! The Las Vegas Benihana’s features a 2-story restaurant with its traditional large table-style grills. For anyone who has not been to Benihana’s before, it is a Japanese restaurant specializing in teppanyaki (that is, to use an iron griddle for cooking) with a fair sushi menu. Generally smaller parties are placed at a table with other groups to maximize the show – you get to watch the chef grill your order right before you! Some even juggle their cooking utensils (and the food!) on occasion.

Non-gambling entertainment: kid friendly!

Have some kids with you? Need a place for them to play while you try your luck at the slots? Perhaps you’re tired of gambling and want to do something else for a bit? Despite what most people think, Las Vegas has no shortage very kid-friendly entertainment. In some states, gambling can be considered as illegal so non-gambling games are made available. Arcades-

Many themed hotels such as the Luxor (Egyptian theme) and Excalibur (medieval theme) have pretty large arcades. Some hotels even have carnival games and rollercoasters that run THROUGH the hotel!

In addition to arcades, there is even a theme park hidden right on the strip! While flying over, you might have seen a pink glass dome. Better known as the Circus Circus’ AdventureDome, it is a small enclosed theme park featuring a rollercoaster, along with a few other rides. The AdventureDome is a pleasant place to spend the afternoon, and even has its own Laser Tag area.

Shopping-

Many hotels feature their own themed indoor shopping malls. While there are quite a few, some are a bit better known than others.

Caesar’s Palace Forum Shops:

This Roman themed hotel’s shopping mall is one of my favorites. Featuring a digital ride, good restaurants, and unique stores, this is easily a place you can spend a few hours in. In addition to the shopping and food, there is also an indoor show featuring an “Atlantis” storyline that runs many times a day for you to watch.

Local Malls:

The better known local malls are generally referred to as the Boulevard Mall, The Meadows, and the Galleria Mall. If you are just looking for some shopping, there’s no real shortage of that either in Las Vegas. If you are looking for a mall close to your hotel, it’s likely that one of these is a short drive away.

Other interest-

Chinatown:

Yes! Las Vegas has its own Chinatown! While I was surprised to discover that few tourists were aware of this, it definitely is the place to visit for unique dining and culture-themed shopping. While it is not the typical Vegas fare, Chinatown has a special interest of its own.

Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef:

A somewhat new addition to the Vegas strip, Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef features tanks filled with sharks, barracuda, and other “interesting” fish! There is even a clear tunnel that goes through some of the tanks, allowing visitors a close look at the variety of fish and sharks on display.

Hopefully some of these things will pique your interest! While there is a LOT more to Vegas than what I’ve mentioned, hopefully you too will enjoy some of my favorite aspects of the city of Las Vegas.

Five Tips For Sports Betting

Casual bettors tend to not know much about less popular teams, so they’ll bet with the “public” teams, which means the lines will unfairly favor those teams. The most popular events to bet on are the Super Bowl and the NCAA basketball tournament, but often, the lines on these games are too risky. Quite often, the safest and most profitable bets will be on less significant games. Casual bettors develop tunnel vision, betting only on the games that are most exciting. Smart bettors keep their eyes on every line, looking for a good bet.

#4 – Time your bet properly

It takes experience to recognize the nature of line shifts and be able to predict them, but here’s a good rule of thumb: If you want to bet the favorite, bet early; if you want to bet the underdog, bet late. Generally, casual bettors bet late in the day and bet the favorite. This means that as the day goes on, the line will usually shift in favor of the favorite. Creating Overlays Key to NFL Betting Success

The key then is to define the definition of an overlay. In horse racing, it is quite easy. Overlays are horses that are going off at higher odds than you expected them to go off at. So, if you like horse #4 and the odds on him are 6 to 1 but you expected the horse to be going off at 3 to 1 then horse #4 is an overlay. He’s a good bet at 6 to 1. Not such a good bet at 3 to 1.

How does this work in the NFL with betting lines which force all teams to go off at “even” money? In NFL wagering you have to create overlays. This means using teasers and parlays to create higher pay-outs for any one given bet.

Game 3: Carolina Panthers (pk) vs. St. Louis Rams

Game 4: Philadelphia Eagles (-3.5) vs. Green Bay Packers.

If you bet $100 on each game, and hit 3 out of 4, which is difficult to do, then you would get back $90 in profit on each one of the win bets and you would have lost a total of $100 on the loser. Your total profit, then, would be $270 – $100 = $170. You also get back your initial investment of $300 dollars on the winning bets.

Not a horrible weekend, but check out what happens when you create overlays:

Let’s say you use the same four teams, but instead of wagering $100 on each team, you decide to only wager $100 on one bet – – a four team parlay which you call a “home-run” wager and $200 on a four team teaser bet which you call a “saver” wager. See what happens.

If you hit your four team parlay, then you get back 11 to 1. That would be a profit margin of $1000 which equates to $1100 – $100 = $1000. That a much larger profit margin.

If you didn’t hit your parlay but instead hit your saver bet, a 6-point teaser bet with four teams, then your profit margin would be $600 (3 to 1) – $200 = $400. The profit margin is higher and you saved $100 by not wagering it at all!

Is it difficult to do? Absolutely it is! But by creating overlays you can save some of your bankroll and will win a higher amount of money on any single wager. By saving some of your bankroll each week and by making a hither profit margin on the wagers you do win, you can lower the amount of wagers that you have to hit in order to show a profit for the season.

Smokers Lose More Rights In The Casinos

Well, the Smoking Police have infiltrated the floor of the Atlantic City casinos at last.
As someone who has never taken a single puff even once in his life, I feel for the people who are smokers in the state of New Jersey. I feel for the business owners who run businesses of a type that tend to attract smokers to their establishments. To me, it’s not a matter of health but a matter of civil rights.

New Jersey is one of 11 states to have bans on most public indoor smoking. Restaurants, businesses, clubs, and on cannot permit smokers to light up inside their walls. For businesses, this even extends to not being permitted to set up a closed off, private smoking lounge indoors for their smoking employees.

What this writer really finds ridiculous about this curbing of individual rights is the fact that the state hypocritically pretends that it is concerned about the health of its citizenry while it places a tax of 100% or more on every pack of cigarettes sold in New Jersey. This tax, as you might imagine, does not deter very many people from smoking; but at the same time, it does put lots of money into the state’s coffers.

The public outcry over second-hand smoke is nothing but a thin sham for wanting to impose one’s will on others. Public establishments’ and business’ owners have always been allowed to enforce their rights to not allow smoking within their walls or limit it to certain sections. But a year and a day ago, Big Brother stepped in to squelch yet more individual rights and take away the rights of smokers in almost all public places in New Jersey.

Two exceptions were cigar bars (where obviously no non-smoker belongs, period) and the Atlantic City Casinos, due to the fact that both businesses have a smoker clientele of at least 35%. But a new ruling passed by the Atlantic City council in February of 2007 put the strictures even on the casinos now. As of yesterday, April 15th 2007, only 25% of a casino’s floor space can be permitted to allow smoking. This is merely a forerunner to forcing the casinos to have enclosed, private smoking areas by the middle of September.

The smokers who visit the casinos generally say that they feel ostracized and are treated like “second class citizens”. There are some employees who say they are happy for the smoking bans as they feel healthier now, but others remark that the smoking never bothered them as long as smoke was not blown right in their faces.

While this is a bad news for all the smokers in the vicinity, it certainly is a welcome change that can become an inspiration for other casinos that can take a leaf out of their book and ban smoking in their clubs as well. Open since October 2009, the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa towers 33 stories above Richman Street in Black Hawk, Colorado. While it is not the only hotel in Black Hawk, or even the largest, it is said to be the most luxurious. Is all the talk of fancy rooms and great service just hype?

Room Types and Rates

The best way to form an opinion about the Ameristar is to stay there. The hotel offers 472 standard rooms and 64 suites. All rooms contain luxury furnishings and linens, plasma TVs, double vanities, separate tubs and showers, and marble foyers. Additionally, the suites contain hot tubs, fireplaces, and awesome views.

Reservations can be made in three main categories: full-price rooms, discounted or special package rooms, and comped rooms. Regular gamblers at the casino are rewarded with $59 off-peak room rates, and big spenders are enticed to spend even more through coupons for free rooms. Standard room rates are $109 – $209 per night.

Amenities

You can also spend your downtime taking in fresh mountain air by the water. All guests at the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa can enjoy the rooftop swimming pool (Black Hawk’s only hotel pool) and indoor/outdoor hot tubs. Besides the eight months that I lived in Las Vegas, I have lived in Minnesota my whole life. I do not get a huge opportunity to gamble a lot, but I guess that is good so I do not have to spend a lot of my money and waste it. It might be safe to say that for the most part of my life, I was away from any form of suits casino online and that kind of played a role in making me what I am today! I have seen most if not all the casinos in Minnesota and this is my top five picks for the best casinos in Minnesota.

  1. Grand Casino Hinckley

This was the first casino I was introduced to when I turned 18 and was old enough to gamble in the state of Minnesota. Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota is also quite popular because it is close to the Twin Cities on the north side. In the summer seasons when a lot of people are going up north to their cabins it can get really busy. They have a huge floor and a large slot selection. I am not a bingo person but they do have a massive bingo room. I recommend signing up for their player’s card and getting all the rewards they have to offer.

Treasure Island is only about 45 minutes from the Twin Cities but it well worth the drive. I love the selection of games at this casino. It also has a really nice non smoking section if you get bothered by all the smoke at the casinos. If you sign up for their free player’s card you can get a lot of nice promotions you can take advantage of. There is not a lot to see and do around the casino but if you do stay at the hotel you will be amazed. They have really nice rooms and a super cool pool with a waterfall. Best of all the rooms are really cheap.

Mystic Lake is by far one of the most popular casinos in Minnesota just because of the fact that it is so close to the Twin Cities. You can get to Mystic Lake Hotel and Casino in about 30 minutes from the Minneapolis area. It is a pretty big casino with a large slot selection. Eventhough it does have a large slot selection, it is still hard to get a slot on a Friday and Saturday night just because it does get so busy.

I went to Jackpot Junction for the first time a couple of years ago and I knew from the moment I walked in that I was going to love it. It is a smaller casino but they have recently added on for more slot selection in the casino. The thing that I like most about this casino is that they have a really nice poker room. You can sit in the poker room and read the magazines about gaming, and they have some you can even take home. My husband and I love poker and reading the magazines so this is a lot of fun for us. It does take a couple of hours to get to from the Twin Cities but it is well worth it.

Also in the family of Grand Casino’s, Mille Lacs casino is a popular destination in Northern Minnesota. It is known for it’s loose slots and people have a lot of fun there. I know they are also know for the amount of penny slots they have. I am a thrifty gambler so this is a bonus for me because I can play longer and spend the same amount. If you are in northern Minnesota this is the place to go.

Grand Victoria Casino And Resort, Rising Sun, Indiana

The Grand Victoria Casino and Resort is nestled on the Indiana banks of the Ohio River in Rising Sun, IN. It’s about 45 minutes southwest of Cincinnati and perhaps 90 minutes southeast of Indianapolis.

The hotel has 201 rooms in three story high wings that jut out into the Tim Liddy designed Scottish links-style golf course. Early morning sprinklers provide green grass and a fresh smell hovers in the air. Room rates start at $69.

The hallway between the hotel rooms and the lobby area houses the indoor swimming pool, the exercise facility, and the spa. This hotel lobby then opens into a courtyard where there are restaurants. The restaurants include a buffet, a gourmet room, a pub, a coffee bar, and a food court type snack bar. On a recent visit, the gourmet room (Wellington’s) had seafood specialties in the $25 range. The buffet (River View Buffet) has specialty nights and costs from $15 to $25 dependant upon the specialties. The coffee bar serves Starbucks. The food court (Queen City Market) serves Cincinnati foods: Graeter’s Ice Cream, LaRosa’s Pizza, and Skyline Chili. Big Vic’s Pub and Grub serves beverages and appetizers in a sports bar environment and rounds out the selection. There is also a gift shop in this area.

Off this facility is a ramp leading to the casino. At the top of the ramp is the VIP club where members of a certain standing are welcomed to a continental breakfast, a light lunch, an appetizer before dinner, or just an oasis for relaxation. Down the ramp is the casino that contains over 1300 slots and video poker machines as well as a wide variety of table games.

As with most of the riverboat casinos, the casino is on the riverboat and all of the other facilities are on land. There is an ability to adjust the entry level on the boat depending upon the water level in the river. There are four levels to the boat and normally the casino is entered on level two.

Immediately to the left of the entrance on level 2 is an area where live table games are located. In addition to the live games there are multi station video gaming machines such as blackjack and roulette. A bar with bar top video poker is along one wall. The remainder of the floor is devoted to slot machines. The players club and the cashier are located on the far right side.

Escalators and elevators are provided so patrons can move from floor to floor with ease.

The lower level houses a large non smoking area directly below the table game area and is bright and airy and smells good. Grand Victoria is a self contained village on the edge of Rising Sun and on the river. There is no need to leave once the car is parked although the town of Rising Sun does offer unique restaurants and shopping.
